Dynamics of real fluids
Material for the study of fluid flow builds to understanding the role of viscosity. Reynolds number is computed and discussed as a figure of merit for choosing between modeling laminar vs. turbulent flow. Ideas of density, pressure, and buoyancy are built on Newton's second law. Ideas of continuity, Bernoulli's equation, and ultimately viscous drag and flow are built onto the students existing understanding of conservation laws. Models based on Stokes flow are built from he student's existing conceptual framework, and these are tested for validity by calculating Reynolds number and checking for expected scaling behavior.

Welcome to our community and collection of high-quality materials for
teaching physics to life sciences students at the college level.
The Living Physics Portal is an online environment for physics faculty to share and discuss free curricular resources for teaching introductory physics for life sciences (IPLS). The objective of the Portal is to improve the education of the next generation of medical professionals and biologists by making physics classes more relevant for life sciences students.
