Highlights: Emphysema and Compliance - why is it difficult for these patients to exhale air out of the lungs?

Abstract: Section 6 of the Physics of the Respiratory System Module investigates compliance factors in an application to a patient with Emphysema. The Alveoli Laplace Apparatus (from Section 5) is used to actively investigate the physics principles guiding the expansion and contraction of the alveoli in a compliance dominated diseased state. This section includes learning objectives with matched assessment questions, reading and writing in the curriculum, and a hands-on activity. The curriculum reviews and expands upon introductory physics content.
