Ray Optics Virtual Lab

Highlights: A lab designed as an online replacement for a hands-on exploration of the principles of optics.
Abstract: This lab uses a powerful online simulation to introduce students to the basic principles of ray optics and image formation. This was designed to replace our hands-on lab with mirrors and lenses. Our IPLS students were able to complete the lab in a 3-hour period and found the program easy to learn and fun to work with. (The last block can be dropped to make a two hour lab.) A post-lab homework problem asked students to use the same program to explore the implications of the physics of light for the evolution of the eye. A short (10 minute, 5 question) post-activity quiz is included with a solution in PPT slides.
