Living Physics 15 - Oscillations

Part 5 of 9
Highlights: chapter 15 of an intro physics text for life-science students introducing the basic concepts of oscillations
Abstract: This chapter provides a careful introduction to the mathematical description of the oscillation of a single object. It starts with a simple mass on a spring, building a good understanding of the math of simple harmonic motion. It then extends this treatment to more complex situations: (1) the hanging mass on a spring, (2) the pendulum, (3) the damped and driven oscillator. Our treatment illustrates the fundamental themes in the course, including modeling, blending physical concepts with math, and synthesis — using different viewpoints (force and energy) to gain insights.
