Highlights: Diffusion moves molecules with no energy cost, but it's slow and indirect.
Abstract: Materials target the concepts essential to an understanding of diffusion. This includes probability, Brownian motion, mean free path, and the diffusion constant. These topics are then applied to thermal energy, which is important in the transport of nutrients, and oxygen in cells. While diffusion is very important to cells, and does not utilize energy, students will also be able to see its shortcomings in that it is slow and indirect. This will highlight the importance of active transport methods in cells. This material includes several labs that will help students apply the concepts they learn.
Resource Types: Instructor supplement, Clicker question, Lecture materials, In-class activity, Homework, Lab, Exam problem
