Highlights: Student investigation of the use of fiber optics to see a tumor in the body with a model endoscope.
Abstract: Students investigate illumination and viewing with the use of acrylic rod bundles and lenses to build a model of an endoscope and view a target (“tumor”) in their patient. Students become the "surgeon" by using geometric optics and fiber optics principles to guide light into the “body,” illuminate the region of interest, and guide light back to the surgeon’s eye for detailed viewing without the use of a camera. Concepts of spatial resolution in fiber optics will be investigated.
